Thinking about changing the impeller on my friends 9.8, haven’t done that much work on a merc.

how tough a project is this going to be, do i need any special tools?

      Thanks

No special tools. There was a goofy thing with driveshaft diameter to be cognizant of. There were 2 different size impeller hubs. You may have to measure old one before buying impeller.

take the front and rear bolts lose and lower unit should slide down may need to bump it down some before it will drop .Make sure when going back together that it is in the same gear it was when you took it out. I usually put a small dab of antisieze compound on the splines on the shift shaft and drive shaft helps it come apart easier the next time

how is it motors multiply when the garage lights get
          turned off?

Trickiest part for me was always sliding the lower unit home when I was done. Lining up the driveshaft, shift rod, and coolant line can be a bit of a bear. Can help to turn the motor upside down so you can see whrre it is all going.

I have never turned one upside down but have a used various tools to guide the line into the water pump.

I never have done so either, but it was posted on here before the board crash and I saw the wisdom in doing it that way.

Turning it upside down helps a lot. 😉
