I have a choice of either a Mercury Mark 55A or a Mercury Mark 400 for my mahogany Paceship boat. Is one better than the other? What are the differences.

      Thanks

the 55A is 40 cubes and the 400 is 44 cubes. both a fine choice those 4’s were the best they made in my opinion.

cubic inches means more power. The 44 has bigger carbs & reed valve opening. Go with the 44

Actually, the 1959 Mark 55A is a 45 cube motor, too. The big difference is in the carbs – the 55A has smaller bore AJ series carbs, while the 400 has bigger KA series carbs. Plus, the crankcase is machined differently to accommodate the different carbs…
