I have a chance to buy this old Lauson motor for $100. The guy says it has good compression and it’s a 1947, 2hp, and air cooled. Just wondering if I should buy it, and what to look out for, as I’m not familiar with these motors.

Why not!! Looks like an unusual cool little motor, No mixing oil. Is this guy watercooled exhaust? Look for an impeller housing down low.

I have the exact motor, but have never gotten into it yet. the 4 stroke factor is cool!

You should go get it! That style is the early Lauson single (1940-47) commonly referred to as the OB-410. (They actually had several model #s but most just use the OB-410 designation) They can usually be coaxed back to life; stuck rings and valves are common but can be freed with patience – most are missing the back motor cover, nice to see it’s still there on this one. They run okay, like every 4-stroke they are most enjoyable at idle up to 1/2 throttle – after that they can be noisy and annoying. No impeller, water cooled only – that exhaust tube can get hot…. 😳

How much are they worth in running condition? I was thinking of buying it to fix and sell, but if there’s no demand for them, I don’t think I’d want to buy it. My dad doesn’t want any more in the house unless they’re to sell…

If you are doing it to make money, that wont happen sorry.

I’ve made money on others that I’ve sold (Evinrude Elto Pal, Neptune Mighty Mite, Neptune AA2, etc.) but I’m just not familiar enough with Lausons to know if it’s a good enough deal that I can make a couple of bucks on it.

Judging by the pictures I don’t think it is worth $100.

I sold one of those last year for $65.00. Didn’t get any other offers. The guy who bought it from me flipped it that same week on ebay for $275.00. Results do vary.

A few years ago a person at Tomahawk
had 2 complete with 2 parts motors all
                        for $100.00. They disappeared pretty
                        quick.
