      I was running my Lightwin today, serial number 3026 06362 for the first time on my boat, and the rpm’s dropped suddenly. After running running for about 30 more seconds until I realised it was overheating, I shut it off. I now have two questions: 1. would any major damage be sustained when it was running those 30 seconds when the rpm dropped? 2. I know I need to replace the water pump (I was led to believe the previous owner did when he actually didn’t) so what water pump kit should I buy and from where? From what I can tell, the engine is absolutely original down to the last screw, so it has the same lower unit it left the factory with and it hasn’t been changed.

        1. Maybe, maybe not. In any case, in my opinion any motor that has been overheated should have the head gasket and exhaust cover gasket replaced. While you have the exhaust cover off, you can look in and see if there is piston and/or rings scoring.

        Again, my opinion, but I prefer the oem impellers from OMC/BRP. Probably should replace the drive shaft spline o-ring also…just because.

          I agree with FrankR about replacing the head gasket and exhaust cover gasket….but I would add an additional reason:

          Those motors have a way of getting the coolant passages in the block clogged by silt and what-not. Is there any chance your motor is a salt-water motor? If so…definitely have a look inside. You might be amazed by the amount of sediment in the various passages.

          Maybe…..just maybe…..the PO did in fact replace the impeller……found that the motor still overheated….and decided to sell it?

          Maybe.
