I’ve been setting my points on my sea kings 5hp with the rub block in line with the woodruff key. Recently a boat motor mechanic told me that was wrong. He said line up the key with the points pivot shaft. I don’t have frank’s timing tool.
I think I’m right but maybe not. Seems like this topic has been covered several times a year.

When setting points with a feeler gauge, I don’t like to use the key way or anything for a reference point. I look at the points contacts and set them when they are at their widest opening. This can be determined by gently rocking the crankshaft back and forth while the points are open.

I have never heard such a thing as that ronboonville. Why the pivot point? Dunno. Use the rubbing block as you have been doing when it is against USUALLY the keyway, or if the cam has SET on it. Not TOP, that only shows which way is up.

You cannot go wrong using Mumbles method above, the idea is the widest part of the cam.

Or use Frank’s Timing tool to achieve the absolute best results….
