I am starting a project boat, a 1957 Wagemaker, and it came with a frozen ’57 Johnson 35hp Javelin 2 stroke motor.
I plan to use the boat on Lake Tahoe where the old 2 stroke is not allowed.
So I’ll be looking for another vintage motor but a 4 stroke.
    My newbie question is:
Can I plan on reusing the ’57 shifter and throttle set up along with the fuel and electronics harnesses?
I don’t suppose the linkages are consistent across all makes and models.
If I only look for Johnson motors, are the linkages the same over time? Does a mid 60’s or 70’s motor use the same plugs as the ’57?
Does Evinrude use the same male and female plugs for fuel & electrical?
Or should I plan on finding the motor whatever the manufacturer, and then find the cables, electronics that match the motor?

Thank you for your help and advice!

Tim, the controls are not compatible with what you want to do as I understand it. BTW: the only engine (other than stern drives with catalytic converters) that is legal on Lake Tahoe is a Direct Injected two stroke outboard! The Evinrude Etech. No other outboard two stroke or four stroke currently is legal emissions wise to run Lake Tahoe last I heard. Something may have changed. There is a huge mis-conception that four strokes are cleaner than DI two strokes!

I know it’s not on topic, but I believe 4 stroke engines ARE allowed on Lake Tahoe.

    but back to my question…
do "modern" Johnson engines utilize the same throttle/transmission cables, and electrical/fuel plugs?

Non carburetor 2 strokes are allowed on lake Tahoe. I believe the Tahoe water cops run Etec on their boats. All 4 stroke are allowed too.

This is off topic too, but my first outboard was a 5 hp Brooklure that came from a friend who left it behind when he moved to Japan. His Grandma (from lake Tahoe) gave it to him when the carburetor 2 strokes were banned on lake Tahoe. I didn’t know anything about outboards so tossed it in the recycler because it was stuck and I didn’t know any better. Will always regret…. 😥

I didn’t bring that up to start any controversy. The controls off your 1957 Johnson will not work on later motors. The fuel connector is duel line for pressure tank. The control box could be used for a few years, but nothing considered late model or four stroke. The wiring harness is in the same situation. The first four stroke OMC made was carbureted (9.9/15hp) so it would not be allowed on Lake Tahoe. The next generation were just Suzuki badged Johnsons fuel injected. Not sure where they would fall. Probably not make the cut either.
As far as what they allow today, Lake Tahoe continues to be the battle ground as to who builds the cleanest engine? Both Mercury (DFI & Yamaha 4stroke) have de – tuned slightly to reduce their emissions recently (2016) models. The G2 Etech is the cleanest motor emmisions wise on the market today. 4strokes have a disadvantage in NOX emmisions. US doesn’t measure that right now, but Europe does! They are going to have to have a catalytic converter SOON! I am not in the industry anymore, but this is just what I hear. Rumor is Mercury is dropping the OptiMax for 2018 MY. 2017 will be out about next month so it’s just a year away. Just my opinion, I may be wrong.

    And……the G2 Etec is still a 2-stroke!

    Thanks all!
Any recommendations for a somewhat vintage 4-stroke motor to go with the ’57 Wolverine Wagemaker? (molded plywood runabout)
I have heard good things about Johnsons from the mid 60s…

No such animal as a 4-Stroke Johnson from the 1960s. The only vintage motors your likely to find that fit your needs would be the Homelite / Fisher Pierce 55hp motors.
