Can anyone refer me to someone that could appraise an antique outboard? My grandfather left us an old outboard and I have no idea what it is worth and don’t have any idea where to go to find out? I thought this might be the perfect place to ask.

Thanks for any help you can provide,

    Sheila

Manufacturer and model number would be needed, photos would be best. Your location might help, should you want someone to check the mechanical condition of the motor.

Let us know if you have trouble posting a photo or two.

Thanks for your quick response guys!

I have plenty of pictures and although it isn’t real pretty to look at it was in running condition. I can get the Model No. & Manufacturer when I get back to the shop on Thursday.

I say "It was" in running condition because, we had it shipped from Ohio to South Carolina by UPS and it appears that it has been dropped and is damaged pretty bad. We had shipping insurance but now UPS is arguing amongst themselves as to who is really liable…the UPS store that packaged it or UPS that actually moved it. So frustrating, but even sadder because it was my grandfather’s motor.

Unfortunately this is a story we hear too often. Let’s forget about the value a minute and concentrate on what has happened with the shipping damage. Doesn’t matter if it was shipped by a UPS store (agent) or UPS. It has $100 insurance automatically! If you put more insurance on it (paid for it) that is a contract! They accepted your money and owe you that amount minimum. I would assume you have sentimental value since it was your dad’s motor. May be hard to get much more for that, but your can try. If you have a lawyer in the family don’t be shy about using it! Shipping companies are bullies & will try to get you to settle for least amout. Don’t do that! We can’t tell what your motor is worth till we see it, but get at least your insured amount. IMHO

Totally with Dan here. I’ve shipped a few that ended up broke too. Ironically enough, two of them went to Florida. One of use here may be able to help you with your broken pieces.

Thanks for the support…just really frustrated.

We’ve been dealing with UPS about this since October of last year. We did have insurance, even paid extra for $2,000 worth of coverage. But like I said they both keep passing the buck. Now they wait an appraisal and an estimate of what it would cast to repair it! So I have take it to someone that SPECIALIZES in antique motors and pay them to look at it because UPS damaged it.

I’ll post some pictures as soon as I get back to the shop. Like I said, it may not be worth much but it worked when I gave it to them…I PAID them to package it, PAID for $2,000 worth of insurance coverage, and PAID them to deliver it! So I don’t see where the issue of payment lies, do you?

Thanks for the support guys. I was really getting frustrated till I spoke with yall!

I’m very sorry to learn of the difficulty you are having to undergo with the freight provider taking care of your claim. Also sorry to say that, unfortunately, many others have suffered a similar fate.

For these reasons and many other similar tales of woe that are all too commonplace, I refuse to use commercial shipping methods to move complete motors around the country.

Motors can be shipped safely, but it entails putting more care, heart, and soul into the packing than any commercial packer is willing or able to provide, whether they’ve been paid or not. When you entrust a good example of any given motor to UPS, Fedex, DHL, Canpar, the postal service(s), Eddie Ricketyback’s Plane Service, whatever…. you are risking damage that you MIGHT get compensated for, but, usually ends up leaving a bad taste with whomever is involved.

My personal motto – I will not ship motors (neither to or from) at any cost or for any amount of money. if I can’t deliver or pick it up myself, or enlist the help of a club member or trustworthy personal friend to help with the logistics, then I really don’t need it and I leave it for somebody else to worry about. The motors I prefer to buy are usually rare enough, and already need enough work done to them as it is, that the extra aggravation of suffering unnecessary additional damage at the hands of the Yee-Haw Bros Shipping Company isn’t required, and I won’t accept the risk of them undoing a lot of difficult work that has already been done.

Hope this helps convince somebody else NOT to ship good surviving motors commercially if there are other options.

    best,
    PM T2

    PM T2,
Believe me If I had known this ahead of time I would have never entrusted this motor with UPS, but unfortunately now it’s a little too late.

    Richard White,
The motor was delivered to my shop and is in South Carolina.
