    Hi there!

I just acquired this boat and there are no identifying marking on what type of motor it has. I’m wondering if anyone here is able to identify by looks alone (Long shot, I know). The guy I got the boat from knew nothing about it.

    It’s a 23 hp Jordan.

Looks like a Johnson V4 of some size. Does it have the metal tag on it that lists model and serial number? Could be painted over somewhere on the transom bracket.

Pull the cover off the motor and look for the freeze plug on the top of the port (right side viewing it from the front) cylinder bank. There are numbers and letters stamped into it. Report back with those and we can give you year and horse power. It’s a late 70’s or early 80’s Johnson or Evinrude V4. Does it have a separate oil tank (VRO) system? It’s most likely 80’s with the zinc anode in the lower unit.

Well it should be a 1985 Evinrude 90,100, or 115hp or later year. That is the first year that had the anodes that hung off the ends of the stern brackets. If it is a bubble back powerhead it would be a 115. Hard to tell a 90,100 except by carb size, but there are other differences. Starting in 1986 the top HP was 110. Same basic motor as 115hp. If all the parts are original you know it is an Evinrude because of the canted motor cover. Johnson had a straight motor cover at the top corners. Like others said, if it is original powerhead the plug in the block above the port cylinder head will tell you the model number.

So I found a plate that was painted over and was able to scrape off the paint and it has the model number and serial number! Here they are:

    Model Number: E90TLCUR
    Serial Number: R 1503836
