I have a 1954 Johnson 5 1/2 HP model CD-11 outboard with a two-hose connection to the gas tank. While the engine is running, everything appears to be fine. But when I shut it off, gasoline starts pouring out of the carburetor until I release the pressure in the gas tank. What is causing this? Could the float in the carb be sticking or not adjusted properly?

Well, that should not be happening. Sounds like the float needle is not doing it’s job. I would recommend installing a complete carburetor kit from the dealer. It will come with a new float and a modern rubber tipped float needle. Aftermarket carburetor kits will not include a new float, so go with an OEM kit. We can give you the part # if needed.
