I don’t know what motor you are working on but early 50’s OMC outboards had a habit of freezing up around the impeller housing. I have added a small hole as a drain just ahead of the water pump in the front of the lower gear case housing. The early QD’s, 10,11,12,13,14 and the FD 25’s also did not originally have that drain hole. Somewhere around 1955 the hole was added and it works best if the motor is tilted up for a moment when it is first taken out of the water. My QD14 had a crack that I attributed to ice pressure and my ’51 25 Evinrude had ice damage in and around the impeller housing. A simple drilled hole like the newer motors took care of the icing problem so far.
