Picked up what I believe to be a KB1 Special which is
identified as a 1940 2.5 horse made by mercury in 1940.
This a sea king model made for Montgomery Ward and has
a mixing valve vs. a carb. Tank is the Thor style on
back and lower unit and mid section are mercury design.
Sheave plate has SeaKing on it and along with flywheel
seem to be originally painted red.

I am looking for some help on restoration of this
      motor.
Questions: I am trying to determine what this motor
would have originally looked like. Does anyone have a
pic of an original motor they would be willing to
      share?
Also looking for any parts info, manuals, etc.
      Any guidance is appreciated.
      Thanks very much.

Here’s a link to a picture of a ’41 KB1A which is essentially the same motor. Pretty simple paint scheme, all dull silver. http://www.mercguy.com/Mercury_Comet_Deluxe.htm There isn’t a lot of literature out there but I have a parts list I will email you.

        Here’s a site with some parts http://store.oldmercs.com/category_s/94.htm
