Solvent to put in 'stuck' motor

Postby twostroke » Sat Nov 11, 2017 2:19 pm

Does anyone know of anything any better than Kroil to put in the cylinders of a motor that's stuck from setting?

Gotta' Chris-Craft Challenger that's stuck....and cylinders look really nice through a Snap-On camera....it's not like it's rusted solid.

Someplace on here I found a formula for some witches' brew that was acetone and some other stuff...and can't find it now.

Thanks!

50/50 acetone and ATF [trans fluid] is supposed to work well... I haven't tried it myself though.

I have pulled the head on badly stuck 9622a 9.5 AKA "anchor" and took 2 weeks soaking and a wooden peg & hammer to slowly jar it loose
used marvel oil ... release-all etc....

it now rides along my ETEC 75hp and runs perfectly

If the cylinders are that nice I might be suspecting a lower unit problem.

I've done the 50/50 acetone, atf and let it sit. Worked for me and it was stuck/rusted.

I keep some in a "Zoom Spout" oiler. Works great.

I have used the 50/50 ATF-Acetone solution and it has worked for me. I have a name for it (Pink Panther P---) because of its appearance and aroma. I have some soaking in a 16hp Elgin that's stuck hard. So far no movement on that one. I freed up a stuck QD with it and I have a couple more powerheads to try to free up and I'll use it on them too.

Be sure it isn't stuck somewhere else, like a broken water pump impeller vane jamming the pump, or rusted up lower gears - I've occasionally found both of these situations.

No...pistons are stuck. I've actually got the powerhead off and on the workbench. She be stuck. I have two, so it's no big deal. One is 100% complete and unmolested (and stuck)....the other's missing some stuff but runs nicely and pumps water. I just thought that if I could free it up, I'd disassemble both and use the best internals to make one restoration, and the 'off' the left over parts.

I'll appropriate some acetone at work tomorrow, and replace the Kroil with that.
