Poppet Valve Up-stop

Postby Ray Mason » Wed Dec 06, 2017 7:15 pm

Gentlemen,
I recently started my Evinrude Sportwin 4421 for the first time, unfortunately it won't stay running for very long. Looking back at the carburetor I found the up-stop for the poppet valve is deteriorated. It looks like ti's allowing the poppet valve to travel upwards much further than originally intended. It's going to need to be replaced, does it have to be replaced with cork or can a substitute be used? Would a piece of dowel rod suffice? If it has to be cork, could one be fabricated from a wine bottle cork? Any suggestions on how you could determine the length of a replacement?

Many Thanks,
Ray

Clearance between poppet and stop should be 9/64", measured by inserting the shank of a drill bit between them. I don't know the answer concerning material. My guess is it has to do with wear rate and noise.

Ray, I use a company called Widgetco.com. They have all sorts of cork sizes, and qualities to replace your deteriorating cork stop.

I'd go with the wine bottle cork.
Just make sure you drink the wine after the poppet problem is repaired!

Go to a store like Lowes or a good hardware
store and get one of these small corks. You'll
need to remove a little from the big end for
it to fit. Then remove the rest. I suggest a
sanding block when you get close and bring
home a couple.

Bob that bottle of Two Buck Chuck is long gone, nothing but the cork is left of it.
Tubs I'll check my local Lowes, they have drawers full of all kinds of different odds and ends hardware.
Thanks!

I found the right size small cork like Tubs pictured in the home canning section of my local Publix grocery store. . .

Thanks Garry, I found corks of an appropriate size in Lowes per Tubs' suggestion; two for 58 cents. I wouldn't have thought to look for them in Publix...
