OA-60 Johnson grey paint

Postby twostroke » Tue Feb 06, 2018 12:06 pm

Does anyone have a formula # or any other info on the correct grey for an early '30's Johnson OA-60? I have one that may be my next victim.

Thanks!

Jim

I think everything was dull aluminum on the Johnson of the 30’s. What part do you think is grey?

On mine....both cylinders are a solid grey a little bit lighter, possibly, than a Square D breaker box. The foor of the lower unit shows vestiges of the same grey (I think...) and it's all rough cast.....no signs whatsoever of polishing. The flywheel shows traces of the same color on the top surface, and the sides (vertical part) is all grey. I'm trying to find out what this 'really' looked like in 1932 when it was new. That's what I want to replicate.

I can post pics tonight if that would help.

Any/all input GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!

Jim

Armor Coat Misty Grey rust paint from Canadian Tire comes to mind. I've used it on compressors, trailers, anything. It comes in quarts or gallons.

I used light machinery grey on my oa-65. I only painted the jugs. I thought it turned out a bit too light. I'll get a pic tonight.

The reason you need one is when you
tilt the motor forward it gets crushed if
the power head it turned to the left or right.
This is the best I could do with the one
I had. Art Decalb sells cast ones so I
tried one. They are pretty crude when
you get one but clean up pretty well.
Not original but better than nothing.

I learned something new I guess. Now I’ve got to check out the OA motors at the next meet I go to, if any show up.
