Johnson RD

Postby kevinrude » Sun Feb 11, 2018 9:30 pm

I have one of the early 50s 25HP Johnsons. They have two threaded pegs behind and slightly below the powerhead to be used as carrying handles (I think). Anyway, I am missing one of the pegs. Does anyone have any extras or know where I can get some? Otherwise, I was going to visit my local machinist to see if he can make me some.

Thanks.

If 302699 is what you want, marineengine.com has two of them in stock. Downright cheap too at only $6.20

Wow Frank, that is cheap.

I think, however, that your diagram is from a later RD. Mine (1953) does not have those two posts (carrying handle) cast with the Adapter (using terminology from diagram). The carrying handles on mine are threaded and screw into the adapter, knurled on the outside and the end has a hole drilled through it.

I guess the other explanation could be that mine is a military motor (RDM) and they made the carrying handles for them differently??

I have not seen the military ones. On the early RD models, that part Frank referenced is the only carry handle I have seen. It is one solid piece as in the diagram. I have seen one side and both sides broken off, but they are not replaceable. The entire solid part would need to be changed out.

Can you get us a picture of the recess you're talking about?

RD-14, RD-15, and RD-16 all show the same handles & adapter that I posted. I don't have the books for RD-10 through 13. Is it possible that at one time somebody sawed the handles off and later somebody else came along and created some bolt-on ones???

Those parts are interchangeable from 1951 through 1954 . . .
