Mercury KG tower swap stuck water tu

Postby green thumbs » Tue Jul 10, 2018 2:46 pm

Replacing damaged tower on Mercury KG4 is not going smoothly. No problem removing power head. Gear foot is loose from tower, BUT, water tube is stuck in gear foot.
Tube can be cut and replacement made or flare at top of tube can be crushed in and hopefully
reflared in replacement tower. Before I do that...
Are there other ways to deal with a stuck water tube?
Thanks
Louis

Maybe heat , if you can pry apart the foot from the tower to get flame around tube where it enters the foot.

I wouldn't remove the tube from the foot unless it is totally destroyed. Then cut and splice a new length of tube. Yes, you can un-flare the tube and re-flair, with luck. Have done this several times. Even if the tube is not re-flared but only sealed at the top of the tower it shouldn't leak. Good luck ;)

Thanks
Will try to deflare
Will also need to remove tube from gear foot.
in order to fit to replacement tower.

A few strokes of file on flare released tube.
It might be easier to remove tube from replacement tower
to transplant entire assembly.
Just enough experience with copper and steel water tube corroded into gear case
to know they can be real tough to get out.
Fishing the tube in should not be too frustrating as there is access at top to see
and finagle.

Once you have the unit with tube attached, you may be able to twist it out with help from silicon lube or the like.
