I’ve got a Champ 4K from ’48. Had it out on the lake today running. Starts good. Compression on both is around 90 psi. Had one of the little tachometers on it, and the best I could get out of it was around 3300 rpm. I’m pushing a 14′ Alumicraft with me and my toolbox in it. I’ve got a good original new old stock prop for the 4K on it too.

That’s pretty good, but I’m not sure I have the timing right. I’ve set the points at .018” etc. etc. but with two cylinders, I’m still not sure if I’ve got it spot on. Do you know anyone in the Twin Cities who knows these old engines who could help me. I guess if it starts and runs, I must be close, but….

On the stator plate there’s a brass plate on one side that the throttle engages. Does it make a difference when setting the timing where on that brass plate I have the roller that that brass plate? I realize that with two cylinders getting the timing right would probably make a huge difference.

I’ve found on a couple of Champion 4LHDs, the carb throttle maxes out a little bit above "start" and as you advance the throttle handle farther, only the timing advances. If you go too far, it starts slowing down due to too much advance, and on most boats the sweet spot is about halfway between start and fast. I found the lighter the boat, the more advance you can give it this way as light boats allow more RPMs, and thus more spark advance. I have a couple of 4Ks, but haven’t gotten around to getting them running yet – maybe they are set up the same way. The main difference between 4K and 4LHD is the 4LHD has the hydrostatic lower unit, although early 4Ks do have a different looking cylinder block casting than later 4Ks and 4LHDs, even though bore and stroke are the same.

Dave, thanks for the information. I have re-checked the point gap and I’m going to take it out this afternoon and see how it runs. I too have noticed that there seems to be a ceiling between start and run.
