      If I’m reading the numbers right, it’s a 1979 70 hp, 20 inch shaft

What do the E and R designate?

The E is Electric start. There is no T in the number so it’s a remote control motor – no tiller. Not sure what the R at the end stands for – maybe a revision mid year?? Somebody here should know.

          Dave is right
1979 70hp (20"/long transom no power trim and tilt) The "R" at the end of the model number indicates some sort of mid model year change, probably something very minor….
          Great engines for sure…

Thanks guys. The pics of this one show a cylinder in the center of the clamp bracket – doesn’t seem to be powered – was that a damper for kickup?

Never mind – I’m mixing up two different motors

1982 70 hp long shaft electric start, no trim and tilt, right?

This is the one that has what looks like a hydraulic ram between the clamp brackets – is that a damper for kickup?

Yes, and yes. Actually, it might also be a gas charged shock to aid in manual tilting.

Thanks – now back to the Johnson – the seller says it has working trim and tilt – could that have been added later?

You ended up with two triples? Thought you were headed down there to get one!
