I’m re assembling a couple 1977 Johnson 6 H.P. Powerheads. Does anyone ever re-use the old locking tabs, or do they replace them with new each time? I imagine they can only be bent a few times before they fatigue.

I would replace them. Club member Zephyr makes them and they are better than the original

The trick is not to open them up all the way. If you spread them just enough to allow the screw to turn, they can be used two or three times.

They can get expensive at your dealer but a club member has been making good replacements.

I confess that I’ve used Mumbles’ trick more than a few times, but I certainly do not recommend it. Not worth it when you consider the consequences.
