Does anyone have a digital parts manual for the subject motor?
It has a two piece drive shaft with a tapered, brass "slip clutch"
affair that fits in a hub that drives the lower shaft.
I got the brass slip clutch out, but can’t get the drive shaft out
of the hub, even though the shaft turns within the hub.
Not sure if I’m missing something or if the end of the drive shaft
is mushroomed, not letting the shaft pull out.
I want to take it all apart, sandblast the rust and crud out, etc.
Regarding the photos, #2, The brass cone / clutch is pinned to
the driveshaft with an 1/8" pin. The larger pin goes in the
coupling just below the drive shaft end, presumably to
keep the drive shaft from dropping down.
The end of the coupling has splines which attach to
the lower drive shaft in the first photo.
Could the coupling possibly be forged or crimped to the
drive shaft and still allow the drive shaft to turn inside?
Thanks!Prepare to be boarded!
January 14, 2016 at 11:15 pm #30125Yours looks the same as my F 70 system which came all apart. The splines or pin holes may be mushroomed a bit causing some interference. I’m sure I had an exploded view but I can’t seem to find it now.
January 15, 2016 at 12:00 am #30130Thanks for the reply Mumbles. I tried to drill the end
of the drive shaft (in the lathe) that’s in the hub, in case it’s
mushroomed a little, but the drill bit didn’t touch it…..
must be hard as heck. The big pin doesn’t go thru the
drive shaft, and the little pin just holds the brass cone
that’s free and clear. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll get the
torch out!Prepare to be boarded!
January 15, 2016 at 12:13 am #30131The J-65 had a shock absorber as well. It’s covered in the shop manual if that’s any help?

on the drive shafts. Don’t believe I have any, but will
double check tomorrow. Thanks!Prepare to be boarded!
January 15, 2016 at 8:14 pm #30164I finally got the drive shaft out of the shock absorber / slip clutch
today. I couldn’t tell that the shock absorber housing was in
two parts. The "shock drive hub" goes inside the "shock housing"
and is pinned. The heat and pee oil from the prior day must
have worked it’s magic as I started seeing evidence that
"just maybe" it was two pieces!
Anyway, all apart, cleaned, painted and re-assembled.
Hopefully the photo will help the next clueless fellow.Prepare to be boarded!
