      Hi Guys,

      Johnson FD11 18hp 1957

      On the carb low speed needle, there is a spacer the needle screws into that goes in the hole first, one plastic washer, and 2 packing washers.

      The spacer has a domed type end, and I think a concave opposite on the other end. Does anybody remember which way the dome end goes into the hole? Or which way is correct?

      I sometimes cannot get it tight enough when I tighten the 7/16" snugging nut to keep the spacer from turning when the needle bottoms out, therefore makes it hard to set the correct rich/lean mixture on the low speed needle.

      Any gems of wisdom appreciated, and thanks!

          Those darn spacers can be a royal pain in the butt. I’m pretty sure the domed end goes in first, closest the fuel mixing pocket. Some guys put a few drops of Loctite on the outer diameter in the hopes the spacer will eventually stay put. I would thread the needle valve through the spacer outside the carb body just to make sure the threads aren’t messed up. I usually try to thread the fiber/packing washers onto the needle valve:
          one plastic washer/2 fiber washers/another plastic washer, then thread the needle valve into the spacer and insert the whole mess into the carb followed by the packing nut. Don’t thread the needle valve too far through the spacer, you don’t want to accidentally jam the tip of the needle into the mixing pocket.

            +1 What fleetwin said. And yes the concave (dished) end faces the packings. Once you have it in there and the packing nut snugged down, the bushing won’t spin.

              Seems like when you want to get one out from a parts carb, you cannot. When you want the darn thing to stay in there, it free spins. The way it seems to work with me anyways!

                Chase the threads with your 1/4 – 40? tap and dye so the insert spins freely on the needle and it will be a breeze to reassemble. No Loc Tite needed!

                    Thanks for the responses guys. Glad I am not the only one who has had probs with that goofy little thing. Such a simple little pain in the behind.

                    Although it will not solve my top speed problem I am having with it, sure will be nice to get that thing set once and for all correctly.

                    I will try it today in fact.

                      It worked great, A little 847 sparingly on the spacer, and installed the correct direction solved the problem.
