Unburned fuel/oil recycling mod

I have installed the necessary fitting and tubing on a couple of 50’s era Evinrudes that enable me to reclaim the gas/oil that isn’t burned instead of letting it drain into and out the exhaust. It’s a mod that I highly recommend for many reasons to anyone who hasn’t already done it.
Now that I have the carb off my ’79 Evinrude 35 exposing the area where the reclaiming mod taps into on the older motors I’ve done, I don’t see where I would drill and tap in to. Can anyone help me out with this or is more clarification needed?

That motor is a bit different. For one thing, it doesn’t have as much drainage as the older motors that dumped fuel overboard. But it does have a drain hose on the intake manifold, and the hose leads to the bypass cover where the fuel is fed to the upper cylinder for burning. If it runs well, you might consider leaving it as designed.

Thanks Frank. If it’s already recycling the unburned liquid I’ll leave it alone. The mod sure makes a major difference in reducing pollution on the older ones though.

There was also an article in one of the chapter newsletters (Finger Lakes NY?) about doing it on "big twins", which is made easier by having a separate cover over the drain valves.

I appreciate this topic coming up. No doubt old outboards are going to come under increasing regulatory scrutiny, will be banned from more water bodies, and so on. Anything that can reasonably be done to use cleaner oils, run leaner mixtures, eliminate overboard drainage, etc, should be done.

Looked at objectively, if one set out to create a device for dispersing pollutants into the water column, one might come up with something much like an outboard motor…..

Showing good-faith voluntary efforts can have a lot of influence, and it could be very appropriate for the AOMC to show some leadership in this area.

I am hesitant to start a thread on this topic because I am by no means an authority on this mod. I have performed the mod on 2 older Evinrudes, a mid 50’s 30 and a ’66 33. The difference in the amount of oil bubbling up in the exhaust was shocking. I have emailed info to the members on here that asked for additional info. In my humble opinion, this is an easy mod that is well worth doing.
