As Billw noted, could very well be related to bad wiring. I had a near disaster on my last boat caused by a corroded wiring connection. Only found it when electronics started acting up and by that time the main hot lead to the dash was starting to melt through the insulation. Could have turned out just like that Bahamas boat with my fuel tank mounted on the deck right under the console.
