      Hi,
I have a 1940 johnson 2.5 hp outboard and it starts but needs a lot of priming. Another problem is that is doesn’t idle. Should I clean the carb?

      Thanks
      Rick

If it’s "new to you" and hasn’t been recently serviced, a good carb cleaning is near the top of the to-do list for you! 😉

It’s up there with checking spark plug gap & plug / wire condition, points gap, rotor gap and cleanliness, fresh premix fuel in the tank, and so on.

Give it what it wants & needs – and if issues remain, then pick it up from there..

          Welcome to the forum!
Check the compression, If it’s too low it will have these same symptoms.

          Good Luck with Your motor.
