      While working on the Mercury Mark 6 water pump, I noticed
      my temporary repair on the drive shaft "seal area" with JB Weld,
      was much more temporary that I would have guessed. Since the
      repair, it has a total of about three minutes running time,
      and the JB Weld was already wore out of the original grooves
      in the seal area.
      I was trying to think of an economical repair that I could do myself.
      Looked up speedi-sleeve, and redi-sleeve, and the smallest
      size they show is .469 and .500 respectively.
      The drive shaft diameter at the seal area is .454 thousands.

      I have a link to a photo of my spare drive shaft, which looked
      worse that the one I used. There’s two sealing areas on the
      drive shaft. One just above the clutch spring, and one
      above the water pump area (where the drive pin hole is).

          Although I haven’t tried it myself, I’ve heard that brazing the shaft and then polishing it down to smooth it out, works fairly well.

            Dave, I sent you a PM.

            Westwind, brazing is something I could do. Suppose the
            grooved area would have to be V’eed out and cleaned up
            a little. Could chuck it in the lathe, cut down the braze
            close, then emory cloth it smooth.
            Not sure what the heat from the brazing would do to the strength
            or temporing of the shaft though?
