      All,

While rebuilding my ’57 18hp Johnson, I have noticed a really stiff throttle.

At this point I have the linkage going up to the magneto completely off the motor. While the tiller grip is taken off the throttle turns freely. When I put the grip on it gets extremely stiff. There is a spring within the grip which I assume is factory. There is also a washer on the rod that goes from tiller grip to gear assembly that prevents the rod from pushing too hard on the gears (my guess). Any other suggestions?

      Thanks
      Robbie

There is a tapered friction plug up in the end of the grip. It’s function is to apply enough friction to make the throttle stay where you put it. Yours obviously is working too well. Take it out and remove all the hardened grease and gunk, re-lubricate with some waterproof grease, and reassemble.

The tiller casting is different, but the friction method is the same on other models.

          . . . . . 😉

Or, the friction washer (#3 in Garry’s diagram) might be missing entirely. Also, make sure the bushing (#14) at the base of the throttle rod is present and in good shape.

The projections on the 303282 friction block must slide into the slots in the end of the handle in order for the screw hole in the handle to line up with the threaded hole in the shaft. Many say the friction block is missing when it is actually stuck in the handle. Rapping the open end of the handle against the work bench is often suggested, but this can break a handle made brittle with age. I like to fish them out with a bent coat hanger.
