I finally pulled the flywheel for the first time on my CD-13 to clean and time the ignition. I found a broken piece of plastic, and lots of oil. all over everything. I took a picture and will post it later today. Looks like new crank seal time to me. Could this be a big factor in not being able to tune my engine properly? I know 2 strokes have to be sealed up tight, and if oil is getting out, then air is probably getting in.

There is no seal in a CD-13. It relies on a volume of oil in the mix to seal the bronze bearings of the crankcase to the crankshaft. There is a slinger that is supposed to prevent migration of the oil out of the crankcase, but if the upper bearing surfaces are excessively worn, it may not be enough. Is there any side-to-side play in the crankshaft?

It’s also possible someone merely got too crazy with lubing the points cam or the wick. Been known to happen…

The slinger throws the oil off to the side of the little cavity it is in. Then it is sucked back down to the intake manifold by drillings in the crankcase and reed plate. As Chinewalker said though, leakage may overwhelm the system if the bearings are loose. Otherwise, clean everything up, including the mag plate mounting rings and proceed. If you have doubt about the drain passage being open, pull the reed plate and blow compressed air through the drilling.

And don’t over lubricate the mounting rings. Excess grease will only splatter out and foul the points.

Oh well good to know. I checked, and there’s no slop in the crankshaft. I’ll clean everything up, time it, and see how it runs. What’s the best cleaner for cleaning grease off things like points, coils, etc. carb cleaning solvent can hurt rubber and plastic right?

I prefer taking everything apart and cleaning it individually, but if you don’t want to then you can use carb cleaner so long as you don’t let the parts soak in it.

I use brake parts cleaner from the auto parts store. Cheap when Advance Auto has it on sale BOGO.

OK, well the plastic is probably left over from an older coil that split apart. Kinda hard to know exactly what is causing the oil residue, could have been from improper/over oiling the mag plate during a past servicing. Or, could be coming from the upper crank/slinger system. Have you had the powerhead off to do a water pump job? If so, was the lower seal assy properly positioned with good oring/gasket when you disassembled it? I’m not quite sure just how this system is "plumbed" into the crankcase, or what provides the low pressure to pull the excess oily stuff down and away from the slinger.
For now, it is probably best to clean everything up and retry the engine. Remove the flywheel again after running the engine for a month or so to see if the excess residue has returned, and go from there.
