It’s a nice one. Sitting under the pool table for decades. Time to get it purring again.
Coils good, will replace the points and condensers.
I drained the lower unit. It did not appear to have any water it in, but I pressure tested
it with my Stevens tester. That showed an immediate leak.
How do I drop the lower unit? Do I have to pull the power head on this one?

      Thanks in advance.

Yes, you will need to pull the powerhead to gain access to the shift rod connector, located under the powerhead. Chances are, you will find a leaking shift rod o-ring in the lowerunit.

When you have the powerhead off, pay attention the the carbon seal assembly at the top of the drive shaft. It is important, keeps water out of the powerhead.

Replace the o ring and gasket.

Yes, you will have to pull the power head. It is the shifter assembly that makes that necessary. When you do, that is the time to replace the impeller so you have a nice new dependable one.

Also, there are two parts under the power head that will need replacing, part numbers 303347 Lower Bearing Seal to Drive Shaft ‘O’ Ring, and 303355 Drive Shaft to Crankcase Gasket.

Also, this is the time to replace the Shiftlever ‘O’ ring 303191.

Last but not least is a new Power Head Base Gasket 303467.

OK, I need some creativity. The shift shaft seal was leaking. Changed the o-ring. Putting it back together and the brass plug
keeps falling out. Either the od of the plug is small or the id of the lower unit is too small.
I am thinking of either using super glue or gorilla glue to hold the brass plug in place. Or use thin metal shim.
                Any thoughts?

Well I have never seen that before.

What is the OD of the bushing? Im not sure if they would "wear" down? More likely the casting? Is it cracked?

It should take a bit of effort to drive it in with a punch.

The casting is not cracked. Someone has been in the lower unit before. The flange by the prop seal was sticking up instead of being down. Maybe it was glued in previously.
I was thinking; what if I were to put in some small wire between the plug and the housing?

Could be corrosion has eaten away the inside of the hole. If it’s not too far gone, consider using a little green Loctite on the brass. If that doesn’t work you can make one to fit if you have access to a lathe.
