Ok, on my RD-16 recoil, there is a friction spring, part # 302222. This is also present in the recoil on my JW-11. What is the purpose of this item?

Does it keep the pawls from engaging the ratchet while the motor is running?

      Thanks, David

It creates friction so when you pull the rope and the pulley turns, the equalizer cup which encases the spring lags behind, pulling the pawls out so they will engage the 202111 starter ratchet on the flywheel. The friction spring MUST ride on the diameter marked in red on the starter spindle. If it slips off during assembly, the pulled will bind, making it hard the pull the rope and impossible to start the motor..

          Garry,

Thanks for that explanation. Makes perfect sense now.
