One of our members has been looking for a phelon flywheel for a Mark 20 project he’s working on. He posted in the classified section but got no response. It’s the last part he needs to finish this project. Are there other mercs that use the same flywheel?

Why does he insist on a Phelon? A Bendix will run just fine if everything is right; and it’s historically correct for the very popular Mark 20. They would never have sold so many if Bendix mags were as bad as everybody makes them out to be.

              Long live American manufacturing!

I’m glad to know the Bendix will work fine. Good point about it being historically correct.but there must be some reason Mercury switched to Phelon? The mystery to me is why this part has been so hard to find? I have a couple of Mark 25’s and a pile of Mark 25 parts but I never come across Mark 20’s. I suspect this is a case of not being able to find something when you are looking for it and then tripping over it when you decide you don’t need it.

Just to muddy up the water I will put my oar and stir things up.
Some time back I ran across a Repco Phelon flywheel that someone
had welded a hub from a KE7 series into a flywheel from
a KE4/Mark7 series. I admired the concept, but, it seemed
a bit iffy for 6,000+ RPM.
I got to thinking (or what passes for thinking in my case) about
                    adapting the relatively common KE4 / Mark 7 flywheel (F514 C)
It occurred to me that if the hub taper and keyway could be
altered to the taper and kewway of KE7 series (F514G) the
                    problem would be solved.
I compared and measured Repco Phelon F514A, F514C and F514G
It does not appear to be doable. The outer diameter of the donor F514C is about 1 1/8″ and that of F514G is about 1 5/16″ and is
                    a bit huskier also.

It would require a VERY good machinist to enlarge the taper
precisely. As my shop instructor would say,,,It would have to be
                    dead nuts on.

Well, guys, I am the dude looking for that rarer than rare Phelon flywheel. Thanks for all the comments, which provided some great information. I do in fact have several bendix magnetos and am in the process of retoring them. Need to chase down a rotor and I will be ready to start testing.
This is not my only classic Merc as I have several running Mark 20 and Mark 25 engines. Also have an assortment of K engines. So, I have to ask myself why am I going through all this trouble to build up another.
I suppose it is all about the challenge. This particular Mark 20 powerhead is going on a KE7 tower/lower unit. Just something different to run on my Hal Kelly Airborne.

And now you know the rest of the story.
