Hope everyone is well with everything that’s going on in the world.

I have a 1963 Evinrude Sportwin 10, model 10302. I am having trouble torquing the flywheel nut to spec. Is there a special tool to hold the flywheel? All I’ve tried is wrapping a rope around it and it hasn’t gone well.
      Thanks for any info

It’s called a strap wrench. You can buy one or you can make one for pennies. A piece if nylon webbing and a piece if wood, and a few nails. Nail the strap to the wood and you’ve just made a tool better than the one in the store.

If you do not have the webbing. I have also used a flat new style fan belt. I actually had a new one that I kept as a spare for an earlier car I had. I would think stopping in a garage and asking for an old one would get you what you need

You can also use an old leather belt. I also used small bolts to go through the end of the wood and belt after my screws pulled out. NABMD

If you don’t have a strap wrench, you can always remove one of the spark plugs and fill the cylinder up with clean rope to lock the motor up. Just make sure the piston is above the ports first though. This is what’s done on chainsaws and other small engines where it’s impossible to grab the flywheel with a strap wrench.

Strap wrenches go on sale for around $10 so if you buy one, the flimsy strap can be removed and replaced with an old serpentine belt. On mine, I folded the belt over, applied some super glue and clamped it up overnight. That was at least ten years ago and it hasn’t failed yet. Oh yeah, marking the wrench with ‘tighten’ or ‘loosen’ on the appropriate side helps you get it right the first time.

Thanks for all that. I bought a strap wrench but I really like your DIY version. Should’ve looked here before spending money.
I thought about the rope trick but was scared of breaking something.

                One more thing
Are there any tricks to installing the flywheel and key to make sure the carbon seal lives?
I found the seal broken when I took it apart and they ain’t cheap!
                Thanks for the help
