      Rebuilding a 1958 Evinrude 10 hp Sportwin.

Purchased an Evinrude water pump kit 382296 that contained 2 gear seals, only one of which I have the part number for 313282 which is not the correct seal to fit my motor, it has an outside diameter of 1.06 inches. The correct part is 3034345 which has on outside diameter of 1.0 inches

In trying to tap the seal from the kit into the drive shaft bearing housing, the housing cracked and broke. I have a new one on order, not a cheap date.

The kit listing on EBay from the seller stated the kit fits 10 hp 1958-1963.

      Has anyone experienced this.

303345 with a 1.00″ OD is the correct seal for your motor. What does the other seal without a P/N measure and was this an original OMC/BRP kit or aftermarket?

I’m just looking at some other 382296 kits online and some do include that 313282 seal. I’m not sure what it’s for but the prop shaft seal and the drive shaft seal should be the same in your motor, P/N 303345.

Wondering if the upper bushing seal housing is original…I know the upper bushing changed in later years to accomodate a seal with a different OD. Your new upper bushing/seal housing should include a new seal already pressed into the housing…Yes, very expensive.
Please listen to Frank’s advice on your other thread….You may be spending alot of money on a gearcase that is no good… Post more pictures and/or ask questions. The lower cast in driveshaft bushing oftentimes fails on these units due to lack of lube/water, this bushing is not replaceable. The driveshaft usually get worn in this area also. Like Frank says, new parts/gears will be quickly worn/destroyed if these areas are badly worn/damaged…

One seal measures 1.0 inch and the other measures 1.062 inch. They are from the Evinrude kit.

In addition, I did purchase a Sierra lower gear seal kit for the prop shaft. That kit came with 2 seals both 1.0 inch.

Bottom line is that I have the correct seals for the drive shaft bearing carrier and prop shaft, they are both the same size 1.0 inches. Will only use one because I had to purchase a new drive shaft bearing carrier when the original one broke when I tried to install the larger seal, as I mentioned, not a cheap date.

            Lesson learned.

            Thank you.

            Thank you.

Believe I’m in good shape, attaching photos of the bushing, it looks good, shiny and smooth. Drive shaft fit is tight and smooth.

              Thank you.

Hard to judge the bushing without seeing a picture of the driveshaft installed through the bushing… That being said, most of these 10hp small gearcases show some wear in that area, so reusing the pieces is a judgement call indeed. I surely have reused driveshafts that look like this provided the fit through the bushing is still fairly snug… Driveshafts for these models, in good shape, are getting hard to find for sure.
Sometimes photos are misleading, which may be why we were alarmed…Be sure to check/change the gear lube frequently once reassembled. Alot of power going through this gearcase, it will not tolerate any water intrusion at all. I guess my question now is why did the original pinion get destroyed like that? Was the gearcase full of water when you got it?

OK, I figure it out. The kit covers more than one model and the larger 313282 seal is meant for the 64-73 9.5 horse motors. Other than that, all of the parts are the same, 58 thru 73.

Would be helpful if the supplier would include a note that parts may be used for more than just your model, so please check it. OR lesson learned and I won’t assume something like that in the future and mic the parts out before trying to put too large a seal in the wrong size hole.

I installed the seal on the prop shaft bearing carrier this morning, was surprised what a tight fit it was and had to use my vise to seat it. More experienced installers would have an arbor press, just kidding.

                    Thank you for your comments.
