      Hey fellas picked up a few new outboards one of them is a 1957 18 hp and another is a 1954 7.5 hp i have plans of replacing the impeller they are pumping good now seems normal flow but the head seems warmer then normal to the touch and the water coming out is almost hot is this just a case of needs a new impeller or do i have other issues thanks in advance

        As long as water is coming out the idle relief port the powerhead temperature should be OK. The cylinder heads tend to run a bit hotter than the block and it should be confirmed with an infrared thermometer to be sure the motor isn’t overheating. These motors will also run hotter when in gear and under a load.

          Hi mumbles I’m fairly dumb when u say as long as water is coming out the idle relief port is that where it always comes out on the lower unit or is it another port thanks

            The blow hole half way down the backside.

              This hole halfway up the exhaust housing. Only some of the water exits here and the rest of it goes out through the underwater exhaust behind the prop. In the days before tell tales, this was where you looked to make sure water was circulating thru the motor. On an 18, it should gush out pretty good to and it will be warm as it has to keep all those BTU’s cool those 18 ponies develop.
