The guy before you probably used a pipe wrench, but hopefully
you can come up with something better.
It looks like my Mk 6 could have used an open end wrench on the
flats below the top most piece, but guessing the Mk 5 is different?

Can you use a couple of roll pins for the pipe wrench to engage
instead of directly on the flywheel nut?

The best tool for removing Ratchet, Starter  part # 22680

is Mercury Service Tool M-60-557 Starter Ratchet Wrench

as shown on page # 25 of Mercury Service Tool Catalog

posted in Old Iron part of this site.

Lacking the specific tool, you will have to pad a pipe wrench,

jam rope into cylinder thru spark plug opening

and keep in mind Righty Tighty, Leffy Loosey…

I have sometimes found Mercury Service Tools at

club swap meets. Once bought a bucket of the

clamps used on 6 cylinder engines….found I had

no use for them and sold them bucket and all

at another meet for the same dirt cheap price

I paid and had to enlist a trusted member to

assure buyer the tools were what he needed

and I was not a crook.

There are some Mercury Service Tools with a simple

work around and others where the Service Tools are

          VERY nice to have.

I have made a couple from exhaust pipe scraps.
I spent quite a bit of time on my first one. I
don’t think I spent 30 min on the second.

Wrapped it with leather and used a pipe wrench and rope deal. Worked well. Here’s what I found after removal.

Where can I find new coils for this motor?

Those coils are no longer available however
you can substitute the OMC style coil with a
                    little work.

Is there a part # I should look for? Or any OMC coil will work?
