Recently acquired a complete 1940 6hp twin and a 1939 9hp twin needing fuel tank, carb inlet cover, and exhaust downpipe.
1. Any manuals available?
2. If not, any spec sheet available for various electrical or fuel settings?
3. Supply of the missing parts for the 9hp?

I had 2 of them.
Point gap is .020 plug gap is .025.
Found point gap was changing when I moved the mag.
With the mag handle at 5:00 O’clock (Fast) aligned with
tiller handle, I gaped each set at .015 aligning the point
cam follower with the flywheel key. Moving the mag
to the 8 O’clock (Stop) position I found one set of points
was closing to .010 and one set was opening to .022.
If I could get it started – the high speed was 1 ½ turns out.
I could never find any combination to get it started.
No matter the mixture screw setting or the amount of priming
it wouldn’t start.
If I got it running and shut it off and it wouldn’t restart.
I was later told the starting issue may have been bad
condensers.
Motor over heats when running a full throttle for an
extended period of time.
The exhaust is also an issue. It is the same size as
the 4 hp. motors. It’s way too small to move air through
a 9.5 hp motor so performance suffers. The pipe itself
has a poor mounting system so it’s constantly vibrating
and destroying itself. I brazed a small brass tube in the
pipe to make a sleeve where the bolt goes through.
This stabilized the pipe somewhat but the sleeve adds
to the exhaust restriction problem. While the gear case
looks to be bullet proof the shape is a big drag through
the water.
I jacked with the motor every day for almost 4 weeks
and never went out without a backup motor to get me
back home. I would run into people that wanted me to
stop so we could visit but I was always afraid to shut it
off. I cleaned it up, everyone liked the look, but eventually
sold it for a 1/3rd. of what i had in it. When I got a
second in a buy one you buy them all deal I gave it away.
Even though running the motor (or trying to) was a
disappointment the experience was still worth the
investment to me. Just letting you know what you
may be getting into.

May 14, 2024 at 7:00 pm #287803Well, cripes ..just found your thought provoking ideas Mr Boathouse. I’m finding I should have walked away from these 2 motors. After futile attempts to get ignition to respond….there just isn’t any. I spent time “boiling” out the carb and using gravel to clean out inside of the fuel tank. Can’t figure out how to dismantle the twist grip throttle. Have loosened up the transom clamp screws that were frozen
All in all, I’ve lost enthusiasm for these two Neptune twins. The 9hp is truly a parts motor, but someone better than me would likely put more into the 6hp, which is a complete motor…

May 14, 2024 at 11:24 pm #287807I experience the same frustration with mine Dave. This is what makes up the tiller. It appears I cut off the grip. Cant remember if that is necessary to replace the cable. Memory is failing me. Guess I need to save notes as well as pictures. After learning this motor wasn’t something I would enjoy running, I used the “If it don’t go chrome it” approach. Took it to a few shows for display only. Found someone that likes the shinny stuff and passed it on at a considerable loss. Tubs.
