I have. a 1948 Johnson TD-20 with a cork float, somewhere i read that the float needs to recoated so it won’t get gas logged. I used shellac to coat it. Is shellac what was used originally?

I wonder why Johnson used a cork float and not a metal one. Seems like a weak point in an otherwise well engineered motor.

I believe the mercury round float can be fitted in and replace the cork float otherwise crazy glue can seal the cork… keep fumes away from eyes and lungs !!

Originals were coated with orange shellac. Modern gas dissolves shellac. Nuff said. I use the Mercury Nitrophyl float. Your choice

In may of 2017 I drilled a hole in this cork,
tied a weight around it and put it in this bottle.
Over the years I’ve changed the gas a few times
last tine being October. I just went and checked
it and its still floating.

The Mercury float is the best option. You just have to drill the hole slightly larger to accommodate the brass needle. It should fit snug. It’s very important whichever float you use to install the tiny clip with the screw in the top of the float, and the clip then fits into the groove in the needle. That clip controls the float and fuel level.
