Purchase a 58 Evinrude 7.5 out of an estate. Looks brand new. And had a tag that it was winterized in 1995! Motor is clean as a whistle. I’d like to start it but I want to make sure I do it the right way. Any tips? Thanks in advance. Matt

Prepare to be boarded!
April 10, 2024 at 12:31 pm #286645it may be wise to also clean the carb should any problems develop. who knows how it was stored.
for simple winter lay-aways I always store fully fueled (carb filled) with fuel conditionner circulated in
for long term I would always run it dry to prevent dried fuel deposits
ignition coils may be badly cracked but easy to replace condensers likley bad to … all normal stuf with lots of help here !!! and utubes
changing impeller requires PH removal sounds complicated but isn’t…see lik on impeller change by pulling the drive shaft from the GC

April 11, 2024 at 8:21 am #286657I’m so envious! Even though the engine is new/never been used, it is likely that the coils have failed/cracked. You can inspect them fairly easily by removing the recoil and the little inspection cover over the flywheel. Like everyone says, gear lube, water pump impeller, ignition service.
The important thing to remember about this engine is that is must be mixed at 16:1…. Ignore all the hype about today’s oils being better, which they surely are. But, this engine has plain rod bearings that need all the lube they can get, or they will prematurely wear/fail. The beauty of these engines is that when properly tuned, they hardly smoke at all, even at 16:1… Do you have a pressure tank for it?
Pleasee let me know if you have any questions or need any pieces/parts, I have a basement full of these 58s. Don
April 12, 2024 at 10:04 am #286679Thanks for all the helpful tips! I’m a bit of a newbie to outboard motors. Been tinkering on vintage motorcycles and British sports cars for 40 years, so this is new! But so far I’m loving it – and all the support that is available, like this forum!
I converted the motor to a single (modern) fuel line and pump last week. I bought a new impeller and hope to put that in on Monday. Bought some lower lube and will top that up on Monday also. And from my research it looks like I should just go ahead and install new coils – ordered them today!
I only have one photo right now, but will post more!
Thanks again.

April 12, 2024 at 10:40 am #286684beautifull engine… do change your plug wires with metallic core ones . you can reuse the boots if ok the impeller is tricky has stated but not difficult
I have used Belden metallic automotive wires with boots ..but 4 feet is cheaper
capacitors likely needs replacement see great articles from MR Mohat

April 12, 2024 at 4:10 pm #286695Super helpful advice – thanks!
PS As promised, a few more photos. It really is remarkable how clean this motor is – it’s hard to tell it ever ran! (The only thing missing when I bought it was the starter mechanism. As you can see from the different color, I found one online. 😉 )
