I have a question about gasket cement on head gaskets for small OMC motors.  The early service manuals (1960’s) do not recommend gasket cement on head gaskets, but the new manuals (1980’s+) state to put OMC gasket cement on the head gasket.  Any suggestions?  Also, the head on my JW20 3hp Johnson is warped about .003″  and is leaking water at one of the corners.  I can try to use a surfacing block and 180 grit paper to improve this.  Any suggestions?  Thanks  Jonathan

circle 8 the cyl head on a flat  glass or   large ceramic tile    till equal shiny all over  and it will be flat.

mount the gasket with no sealer  torque to spec  and it should be ok    retorque after  running it  a few hrs.

        jmho.

I would certainly resurface/true up the cylinder head but leave the block alone.   And yes, the recommendations over the years are confusing and contradictory when it comes to sealant usage.  Nonetheless, I would definitely use a dab of sealer on both sides of that head gasket, especially on the outer edges…
