      Hi All,

      reaching out for some help to get my starter working again. I have a 1955 25HP Johnson Seahorse and pulled a starter from an RDE-18 30hp 1956. The starter is a 6v and I use a 12v marine battery. After cranking the starter, it started to smoke. After overusing it, the starter won’t work. I’m open to all options. If someone has instructions on how to troubleshoot, or if anyone has a starter I can buy, I’m in Redford Michigan. Preferably, I’d like to fix it. If there are parts I need, please let me know what kit to procure. Thank you!!!

        Do you have any starter motor/alternator shops in your area?  That would be my recommendation.

            Take it apart and look for heat damage such as thrown solder.  You might get lucky and find that the brushes have been replaced in the past by soldering the leads (original leads were welded)

            BTW, there should be no need to overheat that starter,  That motor should start very quickly.

              I agree with Fleetwin. Try  to find a local alternator/starter motor rebuilder in your area OR go to your local auto repair shop and ask them who they use to rebuild starters. Maybe they can give a contact number. At least  they may be able to check it for you.
