I am working on a 1946-1947 Evirnrude Ranger 1.1 ho 4407.  It is in great shape except the skeg is broken and I am trying to find a replacement for it.   If you know of a parts motor that I could get a good keg (lower unit from) please let me know.   I understand that the Elto 1940 1941 Pal is also the proper fit.   Thanks for any help here.  Paul Hastings

how bad is it ?   trashed ? .. partly broken. ?…they can be welded

I have even used JB weld (10$)  instead of a 300$ weld job for a small section  of skeg on 75 hp ETEC .

the asking price  was so ridiculous  I got  creative.

sanded and  spray paint finished with  Etec Blue …….  certainly good enough for me

My apologies.  My title should have read skeg not skews. (auto correction got me).   I believe the part number for this gear housing which is part of the skeg is 195 587.  Thanks so much.    I have thought about taking it to an aluminum welder but I imagine it would be very very expensive

if the housing is not cracked you can fix it with JB weld.

just dont  rest the engine on the tip  you fixed   or  hit…rocks !    paint it silver

            nobody will know but you

I used a flat  blade .       I  clamped  a  drywall spatula  (6 inch)  wipe with oil  and worked the top side to shape the  skeg.

just clean the ragged edge with   carb cleaner  to help adhesion of the jb

Thanks so much for the repair help with JB weld.   The problem I have with this method is that I do not have the broken off part of the skeg.   I was thinking about trying to cut off the skeg at the base and cut out a whole new piece and shape it and then having it welded on.  ??????

If you live in an urban area, there probably are several weldeing shops that work with aluminum. One or more may be willing to repair the ske on a one off cash money basis. It can be done, You may expect to finish job with file and sand paper to get finish and profile.

Finding a replacement part for an 80 year old outboard that may not have been common and for a part that may have been a frequently damaged component may take some doing,

JB Weld probably is not suitable for repair of a broken off and missing portion of skeg.

I did not have the broken section on my 75hp….I just reshaped the JB weld…   used a grinder to shape  it.

then  used a sander to smooth out and match  the surface.   much like finishing plaster on a wall with 100 grit paper.

welding of course is the best  but for just  10-20$ of JB weld  it worked for me  so…. if you are  handy  with such work try it

                  up to you

wasn’t perfect for purist  but  it came out fine  and rock sold

If I can not find a parts motor then I will either JB weld or I would at least like to get a quote to have one welded at a shop.    What I would love to have is a paper tracing of this piece.   I believe it is 195.587 in the parts manual.  If someone could trace this piece I would be really grateful.  Thanks for you help

just use  that  picture you posted and adjust it to size on powerpoint

takesa few tries  but you can get a good match

Also check your local prop shop. They weld aluminum props all the time and may do skegs.
