New to me motor that I installed new points condensors coils and wires good spark on both cylinders.95 psi on both cylinders.Carb cleaned and new OMC carb kit installed needle valves set motor does run but stalls out when put in gear. Also tried a liitle bit faster on idle to shift same result.Had intake off gaskets look ok no goop or material missing.Fuel tank works good it is a daily user. Some water pumping out exhaust.Took carb apart again reinstalled. put another set of condensors on but no change.Just wondering if anyone has any ideas of what to try next. All my parts are OMC and are new. There is a shock absorber above the gearcase that often breaks. Put it in gear with the plugs disconnected and pull it over. If it is fighting you, that’s probably your problem. The fix is to weld it and use a shear pin on the prop/prop shaft instead.
Sounds like the culprit indeed. Drain your gear lube and have a look. If the gear lube is real milky, or raw water is present, that supports this diagnosis as well.
OK, well perhaps the engine is only running on one cylinder. They will rev up just great in neutral on one cylinder, but will die out when put in gear.
How about testing for spark? It’s diagnostics that will narrow down the problem. The neon spark testers are very inexpensive and widely available on Amazon, Ebay, etc. A few years ago, they were about $3 a piece. They are not as good as a spark gap tester, but they are useful.
