Hi–I have a very leaky lower unit on my Mark 58AE L. The seal surfaces are gone and my mechanic feels the cost is prohibitive for him to fix it. He also feels that sleeves will not work. I know there are fellow AMOCI members who can help me rebuild it. I am in need of resources to to ensure I have the shaft fixed correctly, essentially a good clean diagram of the shaft. Where the seals go. A machinists diagram, say. Something that shows the diameters of the shaft and length or width of each surface. Or if there is a member who may have a horde of the shafts or better still a leak free lower unit with a long shaft installed. The drive shaft is 29.5 inches long end to end. Thanks

Do you have an Illustrated Parts Manual? Service Manual for for 1965 and Prior Models also VERY helpful too. Easy cure would be to swap in a good used lower unit complete. Ask around, Rebuilding has 3 issues…sourcing parts, doing the work without Mercury Service Tool(s) and getting things
apart. Mark 55 and Mark 58 gear cases are same. An AOMCI classified ad MIGHT produce a good complete gear case assembly which would take an end wrence and a few minutes to instalk AFTER you get the old one off,
Several of the larger Marks and Mercs have passed thru my hands,
but, I stick to working on the Antique Mercurys.

Green thumbs, Thanks for the reply to my post. I was able to find a NOS drive shaft. Then I took the motor to Lincoln Davis at Stetson and Pinkham in Maine. Lincoln is one of the masters of Mercury Outboards, old and new. My lower unit is all buttoned up including a new drive shaft.
