I am currently restoring a 1955 55E. The starter will spin but the gear will not engage. I had the starter overhauled  however it still will not spin the gear  int the flywheel.  Any thoughts ?

Steve is your Bendix stuck?  The torque of the starter should shoot the bendix up into the flywheel.  Try holding the bendix with your hand and turn the big nut on the top of the starter armature.  The bendix should move up easily to engage the flywheel.  Are your mounting brackets correct?    The bendix should engage the flywheel at least a quarter of an inch.  Hope this helps.

Is that one of the “swing starters” where the bendix does not go upwards…but swings sideways into the gear?

            Should be if it’s a 1955 model.

Take it to the place who overhauled it and show them it doesn’t work right.

On second thought, is your polarity correct?  Some electric motors will run backwards if the leads are reversed.  Bendix won’t work if the motor is spinning the wrong way.

Swing starter?  Sounds political!  Messed up for sure. LOL

Excuse my comments!  I am talking about a different motor.   I know nothing about a 55e Mercury.   Should have paid closer attention.
