I have a chance to pick up a Sea King 3 HP outboard. Not sure the model or year. I wondered what the availability of parts and motor diagrams might be for this? I know Gale made Sea King, and Gale was part of OMC. Anyone have experience with Sea Kings?

Well, you might say I have some Gale experience. How many do you want? Lessee, I think I have about 12 of them, more or less. The 3hp Gale Buccaneers were my special interest focus. Gale division made motors for a flock of different stores, Montgomery Ward’s Sea King being one of them. They all were basically the same motors with varying colors, decals etc. I have all Buccaneer-branded years from 1956 thru 1963.

I guess the answer would be …Yes, parts and diagrams are available? Is that what you are saying? Info and diagrams I can maybe get from you. How about parts?

Get us the Model number of the Gale Sea King and I can most likely get you a PDF of the parts manual. Frank has them too. He’ll probably beat me to it lol…

Parts; should you need any are available if only because of the huge number of these variants that are out there. Easier than most other brands.

I am replying to this on my cell phone phone and my parts books are on my computer. But I guess what I want to say is that you would be surprised at how many parts are still available on special from places that sell OEM Johnson and Evinrudé parts…IF you go in with the part numbers.. Otherwise they won’t give you the time of the day.

Having said that, there are some parts that are almost always needed and are either NLA or too expensive. But you soon learn to make them yourself. An example might be the leather packing on the carb needle valve. I just make mine by punching them out from an old leather belt. Forget about ordering a “carb kit”. But hey, that’s half the fun in this hobby, right?

Ignition parts are the same as a bazillion other OMC motors and are available everywhere.

No I am not in the parts business but it I have something you need, won’t hurt to ask.

Gotta run for now. Just got a crisis phone call.

Update- I picked up the motor. It is a 1953 Wards Sea King 3HP. Model # 35GG-9004B, Serial # 522137 Now, if I could figure out what the original colors were. This is faded to all over gray, with barely discernable decals, but that is half the fun!

Update- After taking the fuel tank off, I can see the original color of the shroud/trim. I believe it matches up with the Vintage Outboard Paint color Sea King Blue Metallic 51-58. The lower unit is an off white, that seems to fit Sea King White 51-58.

Now comes the fun of disassembly, clean up and the search for parts. I imagine the gaskets and seals are going to be the big challenge.
