Just picked this up. All original. In the same family since new. Didnt have a lot of hours according to the previous owner. Should clean up nice. Need to get the chrome polished. Any help there would be appreciated. Looking forward to cleaning this up and going through it to get it running. Will go on my 58 alumacraft fd with controls. Any advice in getting it going would be great!!
August 29, 2024 at 8:15 am #290267You don’t polish chrome….once it’s voided it needs to be re-chromed to look like new again. That is a VERY nice engine (I have the same one on my boat and it’s a head turner!) and is well worth finding a plating shop who can strip & re-chrome.

August 29, 2024 at 8:24 pm #290281Beautiful motor. It would be best to have the chrome pieces stripped and re-chromed. If it were mine, I would find a reliable chrome plating shop and schedule a time when you can take it to them and have the work done while you wait. Those pieces are too hard to come by and I wouldn’t let them out of my sight. The chrome pieces are all bright finish except for the lower section of the front face plate below the Seahorse emblem is a satin finish.

August 29, 2024 at 9:19 pm #290284You have to decide what you want to do! Keep it original or clean it up! Brillo soap pads will clean that chrome. Little elbow grease and a bucket of water. They won’t fix pitting. The paint needs to be shined up a little. There are amazing products out there that can handle that job too! I like them shiny! Everyone has an opinion.

August 29, 2024 at 11:17 pm #290286I see your motor has the water ski towing attachment that clamps around the exhaust housing. Those were popular in the mid-1950s. I’ve heard that if you get a slalom skier on there cutting had back and forth, it can make the motor harder to steer, but I never knew if that was really true. If you use it, be sure to put the tilt lever on “Lock”, so the skier’s weight doesn’t pull the motor up part way if you cut throttle fast. I’ve also heard that pulling a skier that way adds bad stress to the exhaust housing, but again – never knew if that was true concern – maybe someone else here will know. I also have a 57 Golden Javelin – a good motor! I used car wax/polish on the paint, but didn’t bother with getting the chrome perfect. That small cover that snaps over the recoil starter rope handle is often missing on these motors – mine and yours still have it.
