I feel stupid requesting help with this problem, but I cannot work out why I can’t stop the motor running!
Yesterday I gave it it’s first run and am very pleased to report that it started on the second pull, which I thought was great, as it possibly hasn’t run for 80 years or so!
However, when I went to stop it by pressing the stop button, the motor just carried on running until I chocked it.
Attached are shots of the mag. The only thing I have done is to clean the points and replaced the condenser.
I thought the photos may help you see the problem……..I thought going over the mag with my meter would find the problem, but no luck!

Thanks in advance as always for any help!

September 27, 2024 at 9:26 am #291134Diagnosis with an meter is needed to check continuity
in the kill circuit. Open circuit, or dirty contacts
on the kill switch.Prepare to be boarded!
September 27, 2024 at 9:34 am #291135Assuming you’re holding kill button down long enough, all that’s left is to use meter to check that points are actually grounded when button is pushed down.Check for corrosion where brass tab is screwed to under side of mag plate handle and for continuity of kill switch wire running to points.

September 28, 2024 at 1:13 am #291164Hi Buc, Stanley and joecb, thanks very much for your suggestions
Good news! The stop button now works!
I tested it by removing the plugs and spinning the motor in the dark and pressing the stop button on and off.
The reason I hadn’t checked more thoroughly, was the motor is a fresh water one with no sign of corrosion, but it just shows you how it pays to be a bit more thorough…….lesson learnt!!Below is the link photos of the motor (power head) before and after…….the gearbox (which is in excellent condition ) is the next job.
Below is the link to several photos of the work process on the motor.https://photos.app.goo.gl/q1ZktYctPT4xzD5w7lease excuse the picture of us in Queen Street Auckland!

September 29, 2024 at 10:59 am #291190Looking at your as found picture, you started with a really nice example. I didn’t run the twins I had very much but I have a single I have run a bunch. Great reliable, good running motors. I’m sure you will enjoy running yours. Tubs
