Hello. Would anybody know the exact lenght for the standard driveshaft for a 1958 Evinrude 10 HP. I have an engine with the leg extension to make the motor longer for a 20” transom. I want to convert it back to a 15” transom motor. Among my circle of friends they have some driveshafts but not having a part number to identify it I am at a loss.  I have picked 3 up from them and they vary by a 1/4 to 1/2” diferent. It has original lower unit. Any help would be appreciated. Excuse some bad spelling here but when I go back to correct words it highlights everything blue and then erases my entire post that I wrote. Regards Bill,

If you have the powerhead off or would be willing to remove it I think you could tell which of your driveshafts would work.  A good time to remove carbon deposits and have a look around for other issues.

Billy you have a hard project you are working on.  The 58 OMC 10hp motors had a lower unit leg similar to the 5 1/2 and the 7 1/2hp on the outside but inside lots of parts were different.  I would suggest you look for a complete 15″ leg.  A couple years ago I built one of these motors and I found a lower unit/leg from this member.   eddelliott@cox.net  Send him a email maybe he can fix you up!

Hello. Yes that was what I was thinking. I am pieceing together a motor from parts. But everything has a part number on it so everything is correct. Exept drive shaft. Lower unit is original to the 1958 leg it just had an exstension added to make the motor for 20” transom. I will have to measure with the powerhead off the leg and see where the shaft sticks up and make sure the shorter 15” shaft sticks up the same. I am aware different year lower units while they may fit as a complete unit have different gear ratio’s and the drive shaft lenght may vary if you mix the parts from lower units that are pieced together. I could possibly jus measure the height of extension and knock off that amount. Thank You. Bill,

My Johnson Common Parts List shows the part number for the shorter driveshaft as #305318 if that helps in your search.
