Launched the boat today and my motor wouldn’t start. Sounded like I wasn’t getting any spark. Took it home, tried again in a barrel and nothing. Last week this thing was running like a champ. The plugs had black gunky material on them. Took off the air cover and base and found a bunch of fuel and a gasket down in the case. Looking through my parts manual I can’t seem to find where this gasket goes. I just started learning about motors 2 months ago when I bought this. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.
July 10, 2016 at 4:22 pm #39976OK, well that gasket you found is the gasket that is between the fuel pump and the crankcase, have you had the fuel pump off lately? The engine probably wouldn’t have run too well without that gasket in place, so I am thinking someone had the fuel pump off previously, replaced the gasket but never retrieved the old gasket out of the engine pan.
Those "surface gap" plugs are no longer recommended for your engine, they tend to foul easily. I would replace them with Champion QL77JC4 plugs gapped at .030".
That little puddle of fuel in the pan isn’t too uncommon, especially after cranking excessively on the engine when it wouldn’t start. There is a little round gasket that fits between the air box and the carb though, look for it to be stuck into a groove on the air box. Be very careful when reinstalling that black choke knob, it will fit in place two ways, but only works correctly one way. If installed upside down, the choke won’t close fully when the knob is pulled. Be sure to push the air box tight against the carb before tightening the air box screws/washers snuggly.
Now, back to the original problem, the engine won’t start. First, I would check for spark, have you done that? Do you have a spark tester? Don’ t forget the new plugs. The engine should be able to jump a 1/2" gap while cranking, but am guessing you do not have an actual spark tester. Please be very careful when checking for spark, clean all the gas from the engine pan, check spark in a well ventilated outside area.July 10, 2016 at 4:51 pm #39979Thank you! I’ll grab some of those different plugs today.I installed those plugs two months ago. Pulled the fuel pump and a gasket is there so that must have fallen when the previous owner changed it. I’m guessing the plugs were the problem. Will put a new gas/oil mix in the tank just to be sure my gas didn’t go bad. Thanks again.
July 10, 2016 at 8:29 pm #39984Well, I hope it is just the plugs….Try to check for spark while replacing the plugs…Don’t think the gas went bad, but it is possible that it sucked up some water from the tank…I don’t see any water droplets in the puddle of fuel in the pan though.
Please remember to get that choke knob properly installed or the choke won’t close fully….July 10, 2016 at 8:58 pm #39988Success! New plugs gapped correctly, removed starter, pulled carb and checked it out. Shiny metal bowl inside, surprised knowing this sat for 5 years behind a shed. Re-assembled everything and fired it up. Started on the first pull! It hasn’t done that since I bought it. Plus the rope is easier to pull, maybe the deep creep I sprayed on the bolt to get it off helped. The choke works great, I made sure to double check it. I bought this little motor and boat for fishing, but working on it has been almost as much fun.

Better go buy a bunch of lumber.
Your going to need a bunch of motor racks soon ❗

July 11, 2016 at 3:07 am #39999You must have reinstalled the starter assy properly. The starter in the pic is installed incorrectly. Do you have the air box for it..if not you should get one. The float bowl vents there inside the box. The motor might run too rich with atmospheric pressure there. I know mine did.
