Greetings. I am very new here, but discovered the site while I was trying to research an Outboard of my fathers.
At this point he is considering selling it, so I was interested in discovering a value for the motor and the level of desirability.
From what I have been able to discern so far is that I believe it to be a 1950 Johnson Seahorse 2.5 OBC HD. I have been contacted recently by someone suggesting it may be a long shaft model. and quite rare.
I was just hoping someone on here was excited about this OB and had some information they might be willing to share. The condition is outstanding and everything that is included with it immediately caught my attention. I might just buy it off my father and put it on display in my home.

Yes, the "L" in the model number indicates it was made for a twenty inch transom. Peter Hunn’s "the Old Outboard Book" gives the value of between $45 and $90 – however Those figures are 15 years old and a good looking, running motor could be double that. Especially considering all that goes with it. . . 😉
That’s a good example of the Johnson HD series and it has nice original decals and doesn’t show signs of excessive use!
Maybe it’s my eyes but the motor pictured appears to be a regular length version and not a long one. You might want to check the model number which is stamped on the lower block on the port side to verify the model.
Here’s a regular length motor for comparison.
