Refinishing a couple 70’s V4 hoods. I was able to find new seals for the bottoms of them. The original seals were held on by some very heavy gauge stainless steel staples. It must of been one heck of a stapler to do these. Have any members attempted to reinstall these staples? Trying to line up with the old holes would be quite hard. Is it best to just attempt to glue these seals on with automotive weather strip or emblem adhesive?

Adjust your cowling latches so that they hold the cover down, but not tight enough to deform the seal. Test fit it before you glue it. Then put the cover on after glueing and snap it down. Leave it for at least 24 hrs. If you are worried about adhesive getting on the lower pan spray it with silicone lubricant. Works great for me. I use an emblem adhesive from auto shops. Wicked stuff! Doesn’t take much.

December 13, 2016 at 5:16 am #49105It’s a bit of work but I straighten and pull the staples to get the seal off when painting a hood. Putting the seal back on takes a bit of time to as the staples have to go thru their original holes and then get bent over without scratching the paint. When installing a new seal, the holes for the staples get drilled from the inside of the hood thru the existing holes thru the rubber. Super glue and some clamps will hold down any high spots on the outside.
On one motor which was getting a new seal, I tried the yellow 3M weather strip adhesive but it made a mess. A bit of it got on the fresh paint and melted the paint. That meant more body work and a repaint.
